Last Wednesday Of The Month

 It was like any other

Last Wednesday of the month,

Wednesday came at midnight

And left at midnight,

In between those hours

Welfare money was spent

On booze and drugs,

The streets echoed with

Drunken conversation,

Police and fire truck sirens,

And eerie cries and moans

From the high, the inebriated,

And those suffering from

Various mental illnesses,

Some who saw raised their

Hands palms up with a

Shrug and what can you do,

Those who didn’t see

Or pretended they didn’t

Hurried away to their

Homes and apartments.
